BROOKLAND, AR (KAIT) – A groundbreaking for a solar farm Thursday could lead to lower power bills for customers of one utility company as soon as next month.

Craighead Electric Cooperative Corporation partnered with Today’s Power to build a 1-megawatt solar array.

Over 3,800 solar panels will be located off Highway 230 in Brookland.

The goal is to provide a low-cost and renewable power source to the surrounding area.

The utility’s chief executive officer, Brian Duncan, said the project is environmentally responsible and very beneficial to Craighead Electric customers.

“This will be a lower cost of power that’s injected into our power bill each month,” Duncan said. “So the entire membership of Craighead Electric will benefit from a lower power bill from our supplier.”

It’s a $2 million project, including the solar farm and upgrades needed to the infrastructure.

And it’s expected to be completed in September.

Duncan said there will be a “flip the switch” ceremony in mid-September when it will be up and running.
